SEPTA Board Adopts Restraint & Seclusion Position Statement Ahead of Policy Change

Picture is that of a light wood desk. There are work-related objects scattered on the desk. From left to right: headphones, 2 notebooks, a keyboard with a pair of glasses resting on it, a silver pen, a yellow cup of coffee w/saucer, a computer mouse. In the center is blue text saying "Advocacy News." The SEPTA logo is in the bottom right corner.

According to the new “Regulations Governing the Use of Seclusion and Restraint in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools in Virginia,” school boards across the Commonwealth are required to implement policies that meet or exceed standards set in the new legislation. These policies are required to be implemented by January 1, 2021.

To satisfy policy development requirements, the FCPS School Board will have a work session on the proposed policy that FCPS leadership has created on Tuesday, December 1, 2020. In light of this, Fairfax County Special Education PTA has crafted the position statement shared below.

SEPTA has asked for a public hearing on the topic to be scheduled prior to the December 17, 2020 School Board meeting where the new policy is scheduled to be voted upon. As action will be taken at that December 17th meeting, the public will be able to speak to the new policy at that time. Citizen Participation sign ups will open the Monday morning beforehand at 6am. We will update the community on the status of our public hearing request as soon as possible.
