Literacy Instruction based on the Science of Reading (SOR):
Currently, there are 4 bills in the General Assembly regarding literacy instruction. These bills would: (1) require the use of SOR when teaching literacy to Virginia students (HB 319 & SB 616); (2) require that VA teacher training programs train their students in instruction according to the SOR and that all VA teacher certifications require SOR proficiency (HB 419), and (3) prohibit emergency funding from being spent on certain reading interventions that do not adhere to the SOR (HB 418). Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC):
Currently, there is one bill in the VA General Assembly addressing the needs of students who use AAC (HB 1047). This bill would ensure that students using AAC cannot be denied access to regular classrooms and age-appropriate academic instruction due to their use of AAC, cannot have AAC access limited by IQ scores, and ensure that staff are trained on AAC use in a timely manner.
